Ceilings Are the Hardest Surface in the House

A wall gets looked at straight on. A ceiling gets looked at from underneath, from every angle in the room, with light raking across it from windows and can lights all day long. Every seam that was not quite feathered and every joint that was rushed shows up eventually, and it shows up on the surface people stare at from the couch. We hang and finish ceilings across Utah County and Summit County to the standard that surface actually demands.

Board That Doesn't Sag

Ceiling board fights gravity for the rest of its life, and half-inch board on trusses spaced 24 inches apart will eventually show it. We use five-eighths or sag-resistant board on wider framing, hang ceilings before walls so the wall board carries the edge, and fasten to pattern. Where a fan or a heavy fixture is going, we add blocking before the board goes up rather than after somebody asks.

Popcorn, Knockdown, or Smooth

Plenty of Utah County homes still have the popcorn ceiling they were built with. We scrape it, repair whatever the scraping exposes, and take the ceiling to smooth or retexture it in knockdown or orange peel. On anything built before the mid-eighties, get the material tested for asbestos before scraping starts. That is not us being cautious for its own sake, it is what the test exists for.

What Our Ceiling Service Includes

Taping is the step that decides whether a drywall job looks professional or shows every seam under paint. At High Mountain Drywall, taping is its own discipline, not an afterthought squeezed in after hanging. Our crews embed tape into every joint, corner, and fastener head, then build up coat after coat of compound until the wall reads as one smooth, continuous surface. Whether it’s a single room or an entire new-construction build, the same careful process applies to every seam across Utah County and Summit County.

Checked From Where People Actually Sit

A ceiling inspected from a ladder six feet away always looks fine. The test is standing in the middle of the room in the late afternoon with the sun coming in low. That is where a ceiling either reads flat or shows every joint, and it is the check we do before we call one finished.

Serving Homeowners and Builders Across Utah

We scrape and retexture ceilings for homeowners in Provo, Orem, American Fork, and Pleasant Grove, where a lot of the housing stock still carries its original popcorn, and we hang ceilings on new builds in Lehi, Eagle Mountain, and Saratoga Springs. Vaulted and coffered work shows up most often in Alpine, Highland, and the Park City corridor, where the ceiling is usually the point of the room.

FAQ

Ceiling & Texture Questions

Q Can you remove a popcorn ceiling?
Yes. We scrape it, repair the surface underneath, and either take it smooth or retexture it. Scraping almost always exposes seams that were never finished properly, since nobody expected the texture to come off.
If the ceiling went up before the mid-eighties, yes. Testing is inexpensive and quick, and it is the responsible order of operations before anyone starts scraping.
Smooth reads cleaner and more current, but it is unforgiving and costs more because it needs a Level 5. Knockdown hides more and matches what most Utah County homes already have. Both are fine choices for different reasons.
Usually half-inch board hung on framing spaced 24 inches apart, sometimes made worse by insulation weight or a humidity event. Five-eighths or sag-resistant board on wide framing prevents it.
Yes, and tell us before we board. Adding backing while the framing is open costs almost nothing. Doing it after the ceiling is finished means opening it back up.
Yes, once the leak above is fixed. We cut out the stained and softened board, check what is behind it, rebuild, and retexture so the repair blends.
Yes. Vaults, trays, and coffers are mostly a layout and corner problem rather than a hanging problem, and getting the lines straight is what makes them read as intentional.
Square footage, ceiling height, whether there is existing texture to remove, and the finish you want. A free photo-based or on-site estimate gets you an exact number.
