Noise Is the Thing Nobody Budgets For

Sound control gets cut from the budget early and complained about every day afterward. It is the one thing you cannot add later without opening the wall back up, which is why it is worth deciding on before the board goes on. We build sound-reducing drywall assemblies for homes and commercial spaces across Utah County and Summit County, sized to the actual problem rather than to a product someone wanted to sell you.

Decoupling, Mass, and Damping

Sound moves through a wall three ways, and there are three answers. Decoupling breaks the physical path with resilient channel or isolation clips and hat channel, so vibration cannot travel straight through the studs. Mass adds weight with a second layer of five-eighths board. Damping puts a viscoelastic compound between layers to turn vibration into heat. Most walls need two of the three. Very few need all of them.

The Leaks That Undo the Work

A carefully built wall is only as quiet as its weakest path, and sound will find any gap you leave. Back-to-back outlet boxes, an unsealed gap at the floor plate, a ceiling that ties both rooms together, a door with daylight under it. We seal the perimeter with acoustic sealant, offset boxes rather than stacking them, and tell you honestly where the remaining path is, because a wall built well next to a hollow door is money half spent.

What Our Sound Reduction Service Includes

Taping is the step that decides whether a drywall job looks professional or shows every seam under paint. At High Mountain Drywall, taping is its own discipline, not an afterthought squeezed in after hanging. Our crews embed tape into every joint, corner, and fastener head, then build up coat after coat of compound until the wall reads as one smooth, continuous surface. Whether it’s a single room or an entire new-construction build, the same careful process applies to every seam across Utah County and Summit County.

Built to the Problem, Not to a Brochure

A nursery next to a living room and a home theater under a bedroom are different problems with different answers. We ask what you are actually trying to stop hearing, then build to that, and we will tell you when a cheaper assembly does the job just as well. Overbuilding a wall is easy. Knowing which layer earns its cost is the part worth paying for.

Serving Homeowners, Builders, and Businesses Across Utah

Utah County builds a lot of townhomes and twin homes, and shared party walls are the single most common sound complaint we get called about, especially in Vineyard, Lehi, and Saratoga Springs. On the other side, remote work along the Silicon Slopes corridor has turned home-office privacy into a normal request rather than a luxury one. We also build acoustic assemblies for offices, conference rooms, and multi-family projects across both counties.

FAQ

Sound Reduction Questions

Q What is an STC rating?
Sound Transmission Class, a single number describing how much sound a wall assembly blocks. A standard interior wall lands around STC 33. A well-built acoustic assembly can reach the mid-50s, which is roughly the difference between hearing a conversation and knowing someone is talking.
Damped board helps, but no single product solves a wall by itself. The results come from the assembly: decoupling the framing, adding mass, damping between layers, and sealing every gap. A product swap alone rarely moves the number much.
Partly. Adding a second layer of board with damping compound over the existing wall gains real ground and does not require demo. Decoupling means opening the wall, so the cost jumps.
No, that is a separate trade. Your insulation contractor installs the cavity insulation and we board over it, sequencing our crew around their schedule.
Same principles, harder execution. Floor-ceiling assemblies carry impact noise as well as airborne, and footsteps overhead need decoupling to make a real difference. We will tell you honestly what is achievable in the space you have.
Somewhat, though exterior noise usually comes through windows rather than walls. If road noise is the problem, glazing will do more than drywall will, and we would rather say that than sell you a wall.
Often it is the single highest-value place to spend it, especially in newer Utah County townhome developments where the shared wall is the main thing between you and the neighbors.
Square footage, the assembly required, and whether the wall is open or already finished. A free on-site walkthrough gets you an exact number and a recommendation.
